Asus Eee PC netbook tip / howto: Installing Eeedora

Download the 330MB ISO image file from the Eeedora homepage, and follow these installation instructions.

I didn't have access to a separate PC to create a bootable USB card with, so I ended up buying an external CD/DVD writer and burning the ISO to a CD:
cdrecord -v speed=16 EeeDora-2008-06-23_01h15m.iso
(cdrecord should detect the drive at /dev/sr0. Even though the CD-R was rated at 52x speed I never like to run my drives at high speeds, hence the speed=16 parameter).

Next, reboot the Eee, press Esc for the boot menu, pick DVDRW (in my case). Note that even though you get a screen with a text login: prompt after about 3 minutes, you won't have to log in: it will continue booting and start X (you should be ready to go after about 4 minutes total when booting from CD).

On the desktop, double-click "Install-Live-Image", enter the root password ("eeedora"), and follow instructions (you probably want to install to /dev/sda, your internal Flash drive).

During install I got an error message "Failed to mount /1. The enclosing drive for the volume is locked.", which turned out to be safe to ignore.

After install & reboot, continue with installing more useful software.
