Using the Digitus DA-70145 USB to Serial converter on a Macbook

Ok, so this is a Macbook tip, not a Linux tip... (I should add the info for getting it to work under Linux). This is an older USB 1.1 to serial (RS232) converter (I fail to see the advantage of the newer USB 2.0 to serial converters, given the relatively low speed of RS232).

  • ignore the little drivers CD that comes with it (it has an outdated Mac OS X driver)
  • go to the Prolific PL-2303 driver download page, and get the driver for the Mac
  • install & reboot! The device should show up as /dev/usbserial

For completeness, you probably won't have to check this: the vendor ID and product ID listed in:
/System/Library/Extensions/ProlificUsbSerial.kext/Contents/Info.plist
should be 1659 (integer, = 0x067b hexadecimal) and 8963 (integer, = 0x2303 hexadecimal).
